How Yuvraj Singh Inspired Shubman Gill’s Leadership Journey in England

The former Indian all-rounder praised the star batter of India after his initial experience in the five-match series held in England. Yuvraj Singh expressed immense pride in his mentee and the Indian captain Shubman Gill, who successfully guided the team to a memorable draw in the Test series against England.

Yuvraj emphasized how the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for July 2025 overcame skepticism regarding his performance in overseas matches, demonstrating leadership by scoring from the front.

“There were numerous doubts concerning his overseas performance. The individual took on the captaincy and achieved four Test centuries. It is truly remarkable how one can rise to the occasion when entrusted with responsibility,” Yuvraj remarked during an interview with ICC Digital at the ’50 Days To Go’ Women’s Cricket World Cup event.

“I am extremely proud of them. I genuinely believe this is a victory for us, even though the series ended in a draw, as it is a young team. Competing effectively in England and establishing one’s credentials is no easy feat.”

Gill was honored as India’s Player of the Series, having accumulated an impressive total of 754 runs, with an average of 75.40 across the five Tests, which featured four centuries.

Yuvraj also commended all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar for their courageous, marathon partnership that resulted in a draw for the fourth Test in Manchester.

“The pivotal moment in the tournament was when India managed to draw the Test series. I haven’t witnessed, in a considerable amount of time, Washington and Jadeja both scoring hundreds and securing a draw in a Test match,” he remarked.

“That is quite significant. Clearly, Jadeja has been a part of the team for an extended period. However, I believe Washington Sundar, as a young player entering the squad, performed remarkably in achieving what he did.”

Yuvraj acknowledged that India’s impressive performance throughout the five-Test series was even more extraordinary given the absence of experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

“I believe it’s truly remarkable because I sensed that when a young team travels to England, they face significant pressure.

“Stepping into the shoes of someone like Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma is no small feat. I think the players confronted the challenge directly.”

The drawn series resulted in Gill and his teammates sharing the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
