Asa Tribe Breaks a Three-Year ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League Record

Asa Tribe achieved the highest score ever recorded in the Challenge League competition, contributing significantly to Jersey’s remarkable victory.

The young Jersey batsman, Asa Tribe, set a new ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League record by attaining the highest individual score in the event’s history.

Tribe delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 175 runs for Jersey during their substantial ICC CWC Challenge League A win against Papua New Guinea at St Martin, eclipsing the former record of 141 runs set by teammate Nick Greenwood against Italy in 2022.

At just 21 years of age, Tribe entered the field when his team was struggling at 3/1, and the situation appeared dire as they slipped to 15/4 in the fourth over. Nevertheless, he played with confidence, enabling Jersey to reach a total of 261, which proved insurmountable for Papua New Guinea, who were bowled out for 101 in response.

Tribe struck 19 fours and four impressive sixes during his 156-ball innings, maintaining his excellent form as the right-hander had previously achieved consecutive List A centuries for Glamorgan earlier in the week.

“I believe my batting is currently in a favourable position,” Tribe stated in an interview with BBC Radio Jersey after the match.

“I am pleased to have accomplished that for Glamorgan on two occasions and then to come here and deliver a strong performance for Jersey.”

The victory secured Jersey’s position at the pinnacle of the Challenge League A standings, placing them in a favorable position to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off prior to the upcoming edition of the 50-over tournament scheduled in South Africa and Zimbabwe in 2027.

Tribe acknowledges that numerous factors must align favorably for Jersey to secure a spot in the next World Cup and expresses his willingness to remain patient while maintaining his excellent form.

“I believe it is essential to ride the wave, as there are numerous instances in cricket when things do not proceed smoothly, whether due to an unfortunate decision from the umpire or simply a lack of luck,” Tribe remarked.

“I am thoroughly satisfied with my current performance in cricket.”

Jersey is set to face Qatar in the concluding match of their present schedule, and Tribe emphasized the significance of maintaining their winning momentum.

“I believe it is crucial for us to continue winning and to carry that momentum from our last game into the next round of this competition,” he stated.
