What Are Warm-Up Matches in Cricket?
Warm-up matches are practice games played before a big tournament or series. They help teams and players get ready for real matches, adapt to the conditions, test strategies, and give all squad members a chance to play without the pressure of official results.
Key points about warm-up matches:
- They are not official matches and don’t count in player records.
- Teams can use all squad members, not just the usual 11 players, to try different combinations.
- Most cricket rules are followed, like six-ball overs and dismissals, but captains can rotate players freely.
- Batters sometimes retire out so more players get time at the crease.
- Warm-ups help players build confidence, form, and reduce injury risk.
- They are usually played at or near tournament venues to help players get used to the conditions.
In short: Warm-up matches are practice games that let teams experiment, prepare, and fine-tune before the official tournament begins, without any pressure.
