Shubman Gill’s double century in the second Test against England not only set several records but also contributed significantly to India’s impressive first innings total.
After being invited to bat by England’s captain Ben Stokes, India got off to a solid start on Day 1 of the second Test, with Gill breaking multiple records during his innings. With valuable contributions from Ravidra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42), India’s Captain Shubman Gill guided the team past the 500-run mark for the first time on this tour.
In first Day of the test series Shubman scored his second successive century. It marked the first double hundred by an Indian captain in England. Additionally, it was only the second test double century by an India skipper outside of India, with Virat Kohli previously achieved this against the West Indies
Gill continued to play aggressively and quickly surpassed the score of 221 set by Indian legend Dunil Gavaskar in 1979, thus becoming the Indian batsman with the highest Test score in England.
